Associated Press Press Photograph – “Moving – With Bed and Board” – South Vietnamese Peasants near Da Nang – September 1974

Description

An original Associated Press press photograph issued from London for publication on 23 September 1974, titled “Moving – With Bed and Board”. The image depicts a group of South Vietnamese peasants carrying their household possessions along a provincial road in the troubled region south-west of Da Nang.

The original Associated Press caption, preserved on the reverse, explains that the group were moving home through an area affected by ongoing conflict. The photograph shows them transporting a wooden double bed together with sacks of rice, while wearing traditional conical sun hats to protect themselves from the heat. The scene provides a vivid record of the resilience and determination of ordinary civilians living amid the uncertainties of the Vietnam War.

Unlike many wartime photographs focused on military activity, this image documents the civilian experience of displacement and adaptation. The simple act of carrying a bed and essential provisions along a rural road transforms the photograph into a powerful visual statement on mobility, survival and family life during a period of prolonged instability.

The image also possesses considerable ethnographic and social-historical interest, illustrating aspects of rural Vietnamese life during the final years of the conflict. Issued in September 1974, only months before the collapse of South Vietnam, it captures a society still attempting to maintain everyday routines despite the wider pressures of war.

The photographer is not identified on the reverse. The photograph originates from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette and bears the newspaper’s archive stamp and filing marks, providing excellent provenance and confirming its use within a working British newspaper archive.

Original Associated Press photographs documenting civilian life during the Vietnam War are increasingly appreciated by collectors of documentary photography, Southeast Asian history, social history and twentieth-century photojournalism. This example combines strong visual appeal with authentic historical context and original agency provenance.
