Associated Press Press Photograph – Kim Phúc “Napalm Girl” – Photographer – Nick Ut – Image Reissued in 1984

An original Associated Press press photograph issued for publication on 10 September 1984, reproducing one of the most influential and recognisable images of the Vietnam War.

The photograph depicts the Pulitzer Prize-winning image of Phan Thị Kim Phúc fleeing after a napalm attack near Trảng Bàng in June 1972. Taken by Associated Press photographer Nick Ut, the photograph became one of the defining visual records of the Vietnam War and remains among the most widely published news photographs of the twentieth century.

This particular example is not a 1972 issue but an Associated Press press photograph distributed in September 1984. The original AP caption attached to the reverse explains that Kim Phúc, then aged twenty-one, was undergoing further treatment for her injuries and had appeared at a press conference in West Germany. The caption reflects on the enduring significance of the photograph and its role in shaping public perceptions of the war.

Issued twelve years after the original event, the photograph demonstrates how iconic news images continued to be reused in international reporting and historical reflection. It serves not only as a record of the Vietnam War itself but also as evidence of the continuing cultural and political legacy of one of the conflict’s most powerful photographs.

The photograph originates from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette and retains newspaper archive markings to the reverse, providing excellent provenance and confirming its use within a working British newspaper archive.

Associated Press photographs connected with the “Napalm Girl” image remain highly sought after by collectors of Vietnam War material, twentieth-century photojournalism and historically significant press photography.
