Product Description
Associated Press Wire Photograph – South Vietnamese Soldier Under Fire, Tan An, Long An Province – April 1975
Description
An original Associated Press wire photograph capturing a dramatic moment during the final weeks of the Vietnam War.
The image shows a South Vietnamese soldier running along Route 4 near Tan An in Long An Province on 10 April 1975. The accompanying Associated Press caption records that the soldier is gesturing towards a comrade during active combat, whilst thick black smoke rises in the background from a gas storage tank struck by Communist shellfire. The photograph was transmitted through the Associated Press wire service for newspaper publication and documents the rapidly deteriorating military situation in South Vietnam during the closing stages of the conflict.
Taken only weeks before the fall of Saigon, the image conveys the urgency and confusion of the final campaign. The stark silhouette of the soldier against the smoke-filled landscape creates a powerful visual record of combat operations as Communist forces advanced across South Vietnam. Unlike posed military photographs, this is an authentic piece of contemporary battlefield photojournalism produced for immediate international news distribution.
An important original press photograph relating to the Vietnam War, military history, Cold War studies, photojournalism and twentieth-century conflict documentation.
