Taken at Toul Leap, Cambodia, on 16 August 1973, the image shows a crying Cambodian child sitting astride his father’s machine gun while the families of government soldiers prepare to bid farewell to troops departing on a military operation.

The juxtaposition of the distressed young child with the heavy weapon creates an exceptionally stark piece of conflict photojournalism. Rather than depicting combat directly, the photograph records the intrusion of warfare into family life and childhood, making it a particularly eloquent visual document of Cambodia during the final years of the Khmer Republic.

The original typewritten picture note remains attached to the reverse and reads:

The reverse also bears the receiving date 17 AUG 1973 and the archive stamp of the Shields Gazette Library, providing clear evidence of its use as a working newspaper photograph. Associated Press maintained one of the most important international photographic operations of the Vietnam and wider Indochina conflicts, and original wire-service prints such as this were distributed directly to newspaper picture desks for contemporary publication.

This is an original period photographic print and not a modern reproduction. It survives as both a compelling image of civilian experience during the Cambodian Civil War and a physical artefact of twentieth-century international news reporting.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general edge wear, minor creasing, surface marking and slight loss and chipping at the corners and lower edge. The sheet has a gentle overall curl and the right edge retains remnants of old attachment material. A black editorial crop line has been applied near the right side of the image. The original typed news-agency caption is attached across the reverse and displays age-related toning, creasing and handling wear. Archive stamp and contemporary receiving date verso. The principal image remains clear, well contrasted and visually striking.
