An unusually intimate original Associated Press press photograph from the final months of the Cambodian Civil War, showing a Cambodian government soldier giving his pet puppy a drink from an improvised bowl made from a military shell case during fighting at Arey Khsat, near Phnom Penh.

The soldier crouches beside the animal in camouflage uniform and combat helmet, with his rifle resting immediately alongside him. He pours water from a larger metal container into the cut-down shell casing while the puppy drinks. The juxtaposition of battlefield equipment, personal weaponry and the soldier’s gentle care for the animal creates a memorable image of ordinary humanity persisting amid conflict.

The original Associated Press caption attached to the reverse is headed “BATTLEFIELD PUP” and reads:

“A Cambodian soldier gives his pet puppy a drink from a shellcase ‘bowl’ during fighting at Arey Khsat, a town near Phnom Penh.”

The caption bears the Associated Press reference SAI/STR CC 1132 and the numerical date code 250275, indicating 25 February 1975. It additionally states that the photograph was supplied by Associated Press Photo from London for first publication in evening newspapers on Monday, 17 March.

Arey Khsat lies across the Mekong from Phnom Penh and occupied a strategically important position on the approaches to the Cambodian capital. Fighting in this area formed part of the Khmer Republic’s increasingly desperate attempt to protect Phnom Penh and the Mekong supply corridor during the closing phase of the civil war. Contemporary recollections identify Arey Khsat as one of the significant battle areas controlling access to the river route towards Phnom Penh.

By early 1975, Phnom Penh was surrounded by Khmer Rouge forces and increasingly dependent upon tenuous air and river supply lines. The capital fell on 17 April 1975, less than two months after this photograph was taken. Associated Press journalists and photographers continued documenting the conflict until the evacuation of foreign personnel shortly before the city’s fall, and many of their Cambodian colleagues subsequently died under the Khmer Rouge regime.

Although visually gentler than conventional combat photography, this is an effective documentary image. The puppy provides immediate emotional appeal, while the soldier’s rifle, helmet and improvised shell-case bowl preserve the unmistakable battlefield setting. It offers a distinctly human perspective on Cambodian troops who are otherwise commonly represented only through images of fighting, casualties or retreat.

The reverse retains its original Associated Press typewritten caption sheet, a large copyright stamp, newspaper-library markings and a receiving or filing stamp dated 9 May 1975. These features establish the photograph as an authentic working press print rather than a later reproduction.

Condition

Good condition for an original working newspaper photograph. The image displays light age toning, minor handling wear and occasional surface marking. There is slight edge wear and softening at the corners, with a small amount of wear or paper disturbance along the lower edge.

The reverse exhibits general age toning, adhesive-related rippling and creasing to the original green caption sheet, together with newspaper archive stamps and manuscript filing marks. The photographic image remains clear, sharply focused and strongly contrasted.
