An original Associated Press black-and-white radiophoto documenting Cambodian government troops advancing towards an insurgent-held village on Route 1, approximately five miles from Phnom Penh, during intense fighting in August 1973.

The image shows three Khmer Republic soldiers walking along the exposed highway carrying rifles, ammunition and field equipment. One soldier is burdened with additional ammunition boxes, while another advances with his weapon held at his side. A substantial column of smoke rises from the village ahead following air strikes against insurgent positions. Sandbags, roadside structures and dense vegetation reinforce the immediate battlefield setting.

The contemporary Associated Press caption, printed vertically along the left margin, reads substantially:

“Weighed down with extra packs of ammunition, Cambodian troops move toward insurgent-held village along Route 1 only 5 miles east of Phnom Penh Sunday. In background smoke rises from US airstrikes against the village, later retaken after day-long fighting.”

The photograph was transmitted and received on 7 August 1973. As the caption states that the action occurred on Sunday, the scene was photographed on or around 5 August 1973.

At this point in the Cambodian Civil War, Khmer Rouge and allied insurgent forces were operating within only a few miles of Phnom Penh. Contemporary reports record fighting along Route 1 and repeated attempts by Cambodian government troops to reopen the strategically important highway while United States aircraft attacked insurgent positions around the capital.

The photograph dates from the final days of direct American combat air operations over Cambodia. United States bombing was due to cease on 15 August 1973, making the visible air strike an important element of the image’s historical context. The picture records the interaction between Cambodian ground forces and American air power during a particularly intense stage in the defence of Phnom Penh.

Unlike a posed military portrait, this is an active operational scene. The soldiers are photographed from behind as they move towards the smoke, giving the viewer the perspective of following the patrol into the contested village. The AP radiophoto transmission format, incorporated contemporary caption and newsroom crop lines establish it as a genuine working press photograph rather than a later reproduction. The reverse bears the Shields Gazette Library archive stamp and a receiving stamp dated 7 August 1973, confirming its newspaper provenance.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph. There is general age-related toning, light surface marking and normal newsroom handling wear. Several small creases and minor edge faults are present, including a short horizontal crease entering from the left edge and slight wear and softening at the corners.

Contemporary black editorial crop lines appear along the lower and right-hand margins. The transmitted caption along the left edge is faint in places but remains substantially legible. The reverse displays light toning and handling marks, together with the Shields Gazette Library stamp and contemporary receiving date.

The principal image remains clear and retains good contrast, with the soldiers and rising smoke strongly defined.
