A poignant original Associated Press radiophoto documenting the civilian consequences of the final North Vietnamese offensive during the closing weeks of the Vietnam War. The photograph shows a Vietnamese woman overcome with grief amid the wreckage of her home at Suoi Cat, a village situated on Route 1 east of Saigon. Another woman reaches towards her as she sits among broken corrugated roofing, household possessions and the remains of the destroyed dwelling.

The contemporary Associated Press caption identifies the subject as:

“HOME DESTROYED—A village woman cries heartbreakingly amid the ruins of her home at Suoi Cat village on Route 1 east of Saigon Wednesday. The house was destroyed in the fighting which broke out near the strategic road.”

Transmitted on 3 April 1975, the image was produced at a critical stage in the collapse of South Vietnam. The caption’s reference to “Wednesday” indicates that the scene was probably photographed on 2 April, although the secure documentary date carried by the print is the Associated Press transmission date of 3 April 1975. Route 1 was the principal north–south highway and an increasingly important military corridor as Communist forces approached the remaining South Vietnamese defensive positions east of Saigon. The Battle of Xuân Lộc, centred on the junction of Routes 1 and 20, began several days later on 9 April and became the last substantial South Vietnamese defensive battle before the fall of Saigon.

Unlike conventional battlefield imagery, this photograph concentrates upon the immediate effect of fighting on an individual household. The woman’s visible distress, the comforting gesture of her companion and the surrounding debris form an affecting record of civilian displacement and material destruction during the war’s final month.

The AP Radiophoto transmission information appears along the right-hand margin, while the original transmitted caption is incorporated beneath the image. The reverse bears the archive stamp of the Shields Gazette Library and a contemporary receiving stamp dated 3 April 1975, establishing its provenance as a working newspaper photograph. Associated Press maintained an important photographic operation in Vietnam, whose photographers and transmitted images created a major visual record of the conflict.

Condition

Fair to good condition for an original working newspaper radiophoto. The photograph displays pronounced overall toning and discolouration, together with general surface marking, handling wear and creasing. There are several marginal and corner creases, including wear and small faults along the upper edge. The lower caption area is faded but remains substantially legible. Contemporary editorial crop lines and transmission markings are present around the image.

The reverse exhibits general age toning, surface dirt, minor edge wear and small areas of paper disturbance, together with the original Shields Gazette Library stamp and receiving date. Despite the evident newsroom use and age-related wear, the principal image remains clear and emotionally compelling.
