Product Description
Associated Press Press Photograph – “Village Life” – Peasant Woman and Children near Tây Ninh, South Vietnam – January 1975
An original Associated Press press photograph issued from London for publication on 22 January 1975, titled “Village Life”. The image shows a South Vietnamese peasant woman rocking her children to sleep in a hammock beside the family’s buffalo pen in a village near Tây Ninh, approximately fifty-five miles north-west of Saigon.
Although outwardly a quiet domestic scene, the photograph belongs firmly to the final phase of the Vietnam War. Tây Ninh was a strategically important province close to the Cambodian border and was heavily affected by military activity during the conflict. Issued only months before the fall of Saigon in April 1975, the image records the persistence of ordinary rural life in a region shaped by war, insecurity and displacement.
The photograph is especially appealing because it does not rely on overt military subject matter. Instead, it documents civilian life, family, labour, domestic space and rural survival during wartime. The buffalo, hammock and village setting give the image strong ethnographic and social-history interest as well as Vietnam War relevance.
The original Associated Press caption remains affixed to the reverse. The photographer is not named. The photograph comes from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette and bears the newspaper’s archive stamp and filing marks to the reverse, providing excellent provenance and confirming its survival from a working British newspaper archive.
Original Vietnam War-era press photographs showing everyday civilian life are increasingly appreciated by collectors of documentary photography, social history, Cold War material and Southeast Asian history. This is a well-composed and quietly powerful example, contrasting domestic calm with the wider instability of South Vietnam in early 1975.
