Associated Press Press Photograph – “Girls with Guns” – Cambodian Militia Women near Kompong Chhnang – October 1974
Description
An original Associated Press press photograph issued from London for publication on 30 October 1974, titled “Girls with Guns”. The photograph shows young Cambodian militia women resting in the shade of a house in a village near the provincial town of Kompong Chhnang, where insurgent forces had recently attacked a series of government outposts.
The original Associated Press caption remains affixed to the reverse. It identifies the women as militia members and places the scene in Cambodia during the final stages of the Cambodian Civil War, only months before the fall of Phnom Penh and the beginning of Khmer Rouge rule in April 1975.
This is a particularly strong and visually memorable press photograph. The image brings together several important elements: women combatants, rural Cambodia, irregular warfare, youth, weapons and the atmosphere of a conflict moving ever closer to its conclusion. The relaxed grouping of the armed women, seated barefoot in the shade with rifles in hand, gives the photograph unusual immediacy and documentary force.
The photograph has considerable historical and collector interest. Images of female militia members and armed women from the Cambodian Civil War are less commonly encountered than standard military or political news photographs, and this example provides a vivid record of the way local defence, insurgency and civil war affected village communities.
The photographer is not identified on the reverse. The photograph originates from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette and bears the newspaper’s archive stamp and filing marks, providing excellent provenance and confirming its use within a working British newspaper archive.
Original Associated Press photographs relating to Cambodia in 1974–75 are increasingly sought after by collectors of Indochina conflict material, Cold War history, military photography, documentary photography and twentieth-century photojournalism. This example is one of the stronger images in the group because of its subject, composition and direct military content.
