Product Description

Associated Press Wire Photograph – Cambodian Police Patrol Following Anti-Chinese Disturbances, Phnom Penh – 26 February 1975

Description

An original Associated Press wire photograph documenting civil unrest in Phnom Penh during the final months of the Cambodian Civil War. The image shows Cambodian police patrolling a disturbance area in the southern part of Phnom Penh on 26 February 1975 after students reportedly attacked the Olympic Market district and ransacked Chinese-owned businesses. The accompanying Associated Press caption records that police were deployed in trucks to restore order and disperse the crowds.

Taken only weeks before the fall of Phnom Penh to Khmer Rouge forces in April 1975, the photograph captures a significant but often overlooked aspect of Cambodia’s political and social turmoil during the closing stages of the conflict. While much surviving photographic material from 1975 focuses on military operations, this image records urban unrest, ethnic tensions and the deteriorating security situation within the capital itself. As such it provides valuable visual evidence of the instability that preceded one of the most consequential events in modern Cambodian history.

Preserved within the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, the photograph retains its original Associated Press caption and newspaper archive provenance.
