Associated Press Wire Photograph – Hungry Cambodian Children Await Food Distribution During Siege of Phnom Penh – March 1975

Description

An original Associated Press wire photograph documenting the humanitarian crisis in Cambodia during the final weeks of the Cambodian Civil War. The image depicts a group of hungry Cambodian children waiting for food distribution in Phnom Penh on 5 March 1975. The accompanying Associated Press caption notes that the besieged Cambodian capital had been effectively cut off by land and sea, while a United States-sponsored rice airlift was underway in an attempt to alleviate worsening shortages.

Taken just weeks before the fall of Phnom Penh to Khmer Rouge forces on 17 April 1975, the photograph provides a powerful contemporary record of civilian suffering during one of the most significant crises of the Cold War era in Southeast Asia. The children’s expressions and the crowded conditions vividly illustrate the human consequences of prolonged conflict, siege and food scarcity. Images of this type were widely circulated by international news agencies and played an important role in informing global audiences about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Cambodia during the closing stages of the war.

The photograph survives with its original Associated Press wire-service caption and comes from the photographic archive of the Shields Gazette, preserving its period newspaper provenance.
