The contemporary caption identifies the moment as the expulsion of residents from their shops on the day Phnom Penh surrendered.

The soldier dominates the composition, his mouth open in command and his pistol thrust forward, while other armed Khmer Rouge fighters stand behind him. The immediacy of the image makes it one of the most recognisable visual records of the fall of Phnom Penh and the beginning of the Khmer Rouge’s radical transformation of Cambodian society.

The contemporary Associated Press caption printed along the left margin reads substantially:

“PHNOM PENH, MAY 7 (AP) — Red Khmer soldier, shouting and raising his pistol, drives Phnom Penh population out of their shops, the same day when the Cambodian capital surrendered to the Red Khmer. Photo was taken from TV film of West German television.”

Although transmitted by Associated Press on 7 May 1975, the scene itself was recorded on 17 April 1975, when Khmer Rouge forces entered Phnom Penh and overthrew the Khmer Republic. The image was derived from West German television footage rather than from a conventional still-camera negative, explaining its slightly softened television-frame quality. Modern institutional and news archives continue to identify this exact scene as a Khmer Rouge soldier waving his pistol and ordering shopkeepers to abandon their premises as Phnom Penh fell.

The apparent victory was followed almost immediately by the forced emptying of the capital. Khmer Rouge troops ordered virtually the entire population—including hospital patients, children, elderly residents and refugees—to leave the city and travel into the countryside. Residents were told that the evacuation would be temporary, but Phnom Penh’s urban population was instead dispersed into rural labour collectives as part of the regime’s revolutionary programme.

This makes the photograph more than a general image of armed occupation. It records the implementation of one of the defining acts of the Khmer Rouge takeover: the coercive destruction of urban life and the beginning of the population transfers that preceded forced labour, starvation, persecution and mass death during Democratic Kampuchea.

The print was received by the Shields Gazette Library on 8 May 1975, one day after the Associated Press transmission date. Its contemporary AP caption, wirephoto format, newsroom crop lines and archive stamp establish it as an authentic working newspaper photograph rather than a later reproduction.

Condition

Good condition for an original working press photograph. There is light overall toning, general handling wear and minor surface marking. Small creases and slight edge wear are present, with some softening at the corners. Contemporary black editorial crop lines appear along the lower and right-hand margins.

The original caption remains printed along the left side of the image and is substantially legible. The reverse displays age-related toning, staining and handling marks, together with the faint Shields Gazette Library archive stamp and a receiving stamp dated 8 May 1975. The principal image remains clear and retains strong visual impact.
