Product Description
Original woodcut. Date: c.1550-1575. German text including on verso. Early edition. Sheet size: 35.2cm x 43.3cm. Map size: 38.8cm x 33.4cm. Printed in Basle in Germany by Petri, it shows the Pyramids, Babylon, the Great Sphinx of Giza and ships and crocodiles on the Nile river. The verso includes a woodcut of a lady in Court dress. This is from Munster’s ‘Cosmographia’ which was the earliest German depiction of the world. It ran to numerous editions and was important in reviving the study of geography in 16th century Europe. The sheet is very slightly creased to the margins but this is a near fine, bright, clean impression of a rare map.
