Product Description

Original woodcut. Date: c.1544-1558. German text including on verso. Early edition. Sheet size: 35cm x 22cm. Map size: 17.2cm x 15.9cm. Shows northern Egypt and the Nile delta with Alexandria to the north-west, Cairo to the centre and the pyramids represented as rectangular blocks to the west. This is from Munster’s ‘Cosmographia’ which was the earliest German depiction of the world. It ran to numerous editions and was important in reviving the study of geography in 16th century Europe. Includes two woodcuts, one of a ram and the other of a fountain to the verso. The sheet is very slightly creased to the margins but this is a near fine, bright, clean impression of a rare map.
