Rabbit On Clockwork Sledge: A Brief Description
The German Rabbit on Clockwork Sledge, dating from around 1945 to 1949, is an exquisite and evocative post-war toy, remarkable both for its craftsmanship and its provenance as part of Bunny Campione’s personal collection. It exemplifies the imaginative charm and fine mechanical ingenuity characteristic of German toy production during the mid-twentieth century, when skilled makers were once again crafting toys of exceptional quality following the privations of the war years.
This piece was sold at auction by Bunny Campione and she was pictured with her collection ahead of the auction. Please see above photograph (BBC News).
Materials and Craftsmanship
The piece comprises a plush artificial silk rabbit seated upon a tinplate sledge, powered by an internal clockwork mechanism. There is discolouration to the plush and in some areas, the pin-jointed limbs of the rabbit have come through the plush. The rabbit has one orange eye and one black, slightly set lower. This may have been replaced at some point. The rabbit wears a blue faded ribbon tied around its neck. There is slight rusting to the cream painted tinplate clockwork sledge – the clockwork mechanism moves, but does not appear to wind up.
Presentation and Significance
The overall composition of the toy is delightfully balanced, combining the warmth of the plush animal with the cool gleam of metal. It evokes the atmosphere of a wintry landscape and a sense of childlike wonder that transcends its era. Toys of this type were rare luxuries in the immediate post-war years, representing not only skilled handcrafting but also a symbolic return to joy and creativity after hardship. As part of Bunny Campione’s personal rabbit collection, this particular example carries an additional layer of cultural and emotional value. Known for her discerning eye and deep affection for antique toys, Campione’s ownership affirms the piece’s exceptional quality and historical importance. It stands as both a testament to the artistry of German toy makers in the 1940s and a cherished reminder of the enduring appeal of finely made mechanical playthings.
In every detail, the tactile softness of its fur, the delicate hand-stitching, the ingenuity of its clockwork mechanism, and the charm of its motion, this piece captures the innocence, craftsmanship, and enduring nostalgia of a vanished age.
