Description:
A mid-seventeenth-century copper-engraved regional map by the Amsterdam house of Willem and Joan Blaeu, depicting the Kingdoms of Granada and Murcia in south-eastern Iberia. Issued for the Atlas Novus and later Blaeu atlases, the sheet blends scholarly cartography with courtly decoration, intended equally for reference and display.
Geographic scope and content
- Coverage: From the Alborán coast (Málaga–Almería) across the Sierra Nevada and associated sierras to the Segura basin and Mediterranean littoral of Murcia (Cartagena–Murcia–Orihuela fringe), touching the Valencian frontier to the north-east and Upper Andalusia (Jaén) inland.
- Urban hierarchy: Major centres are clearly stepped in type size: Granada, Málaga, Almería, Guadix, Baza, Loja, and on the Murcian side Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, with market towns and ports in smaller italic types.
- Hydrography: Blaeu emphasises the Genil (issuing from the Sierra Nevada), Guadalfeo, Andarax, Almanzora, and, to the east, the Segura with its tributary the Guadalentín. Rivers are continuous and logically placed, a hallmark of the workshop’s editorial checks.
- Relief and routes: Mountain systems are rendered in the period’s hill-shade “molehills”, making passes legible (notably across the Nevada and the Segura headwaters). Settlement strings along valley floors hint at overland routes between court, cathedral cities and ports.
- Littoral detail: The coast shows crenulated headlands and capes—e.g., Cabo de Gata and Cabo de Palos—with harbours and roadsteads carefully named, reflecting the maritime economy.
