An original French-language German propaganda leaflet reproducing and attacking a speech by Winston Churchill delivered on 27 April 1941, issued for circulation in occupied France during the Second World War.

The front page prominently reproduces Churchill’s portrait beneath the headline “CHURCHILL PARLE”, together with the assertion that Churchill had declared the total defeat of Hitler and Mussolini to be certain. The interior text reproduces substantial extracts from Churchill’s speech before subjecting them to German editorial commentary intended to undermine Allied credibility and portray Churchill as a politician detached from military realities. Topics discussed include the Blitz, North Africa, Greece, Crete, the Battle of the Atlantic, British naval operations, American aid, and Britain’s strategic position in 1941.

The reverse includes a photograph of Churchill touring bomb-damaged British cities, accompanied by further commentary designed to present Britain as weakened and exhausted by war. The leaflet forms part of the extensive German psychological warfare campaign directed at occupied Europe, where Churchill was frequently portrayed as Germany’s principal political enemy and the symbolic embodiment of British resistance.

Unlike many wartime propaganda leaflets which survive anonymously, this example possesses exceptional collecting provenance. It formed part of the collection of Robert Hastings, one of the foremost Churchill scholars and collectors of the post-war era. Hastings devoted decades to assembling material relating to Churchill’s public image, speeches, wartime leadership and historical reputation, including both supportive and hostile contemporary sources.

The leaflet subsequently entered The Churchill Collection of Steve Forbes, publisher of Forbes magazine and one of the most important private Churchill collectors of modern times. Forbes assembled an internationally recognised collection of Churchill books, manuscripts, documents and ephemera, creating one of the most significant private archives devoted to Churchill ever formed. Material passing through both the Hastings and Forbes collections carries provenance of genuine significance within the field of Churchill collecting and scholarship.

The present leaflet is therefore notable not only as a rare survival of German wartime propaganda but also as an artefact preserved by two major Churchill collections. The irony of an item intended to discredit Churchill ultimately becoming part of two celebrated Churchill archives considerably enhances its historical and collecting appeal.

Institutional examples of related anti-Churchill propaganda leaflets are preserved within French archives, the Imperial War Museums, the British Library, and specialist collections relating to German psychological warfare. Individual ephemeral variants such as the present example survive far less frequently in commerce than official British wartime publications.
