Physical Characteristics

Elephants are characterised by their immense size, with adult males (bulls) standing up to 3 metres tall at the shoulder and weighing between 4,000 and 6,000 kilograms, depending on the species. Females (cows) are slightly smaller. Their bodies are covered in thick, greyish skin, which is wrinkled and can be up to 2.5 centimetres thick, helping to retain moisture and regulate body temperature.

One of the most iconic features of an elephant is its long, muscular trunk, an extension of the upper lip and nose.
