Seahorses, despite their marine lifestyle, are not strong swimmers. They use a small fin on their back that beats rapidly to propel themselves, and they steer using pectoral fins on the sides of their head. There are around 46 known species of seahorses. Sizes range from the tiny pygmy seahorse (less than 2 cm) to larger species that can grow up to 35 cm long.

Physical Characteristics

Seahorses are the only animals in which the males carry and give birth to the young. The female deposits eggs into the male’s brood pouch, where he fertilises them and carries them until they hatch. Seahorses can change colour to blend with their surroundings, helping them hide from predators. Some species can even grow skin filaments that look like seaweed. Seahorses lack a stomach, so food passes quickly through their digestive system. As a result, they must eat almost constantly—up to 3,000 tiny shrimp or plankton a day. They have prehensile (grasping) tails that they use to anchor themselves to seagrasses or coral to avoid drifting with the currents. Seahorses can move their eyes independently, allowing them to look forward and backward at the same time—a handy trait for spotting predators and prey.

Behaviour and Social Structure

Many seahorse species form monogamous pairs, often engaging in daily “dances” or rituals to reinforce their bond. Seahorses have elaborate courtship rituals, which include: changing colour, swimming side by side, spiralling dances and synchronised movements. These rituals help strengthen the pairs bond and prepare the male for receiving eggs. Males tend to be territorial, occupying small areas and using their tails to anchor to fixed objects and females usually have larger home ranges visiting multiple male territories before choosing a mate.

Habitat and Diet

Seahorses live in shallow coastal waters worldwide, mostly in tropical and temperate seas.  They are common in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.  Their preferred environments are seagrass beds, mangroves, estuaries, coral reefs and sponge gardens.  Some species live in muddy or sandy bottoms where they can anchor to vegetation or debris.  They feed on tiny shrimp, plankton, fish larvae and other tiny organisms floating in the water.  They eat by using the long, tube-like snout to suck in prey.

Conservation Status

Seahorses face significant threats due to habitat loss, overfishing and climate change. Many species are listed as vulnerable or endangered.

Cultural Significance

In Ancient Greece and Rome seahorses were associated with Poseidon, god of the sea. They were thought to pull his chariot through the sea. In Chinese culture the seahorse is considered a type of sea dragon and believed to hold mystical powers and in medieval Europe, the seahorse was viewed as a symbol of patience, contentment and persistence. It also came to represent the idea of calm strength due to its peaceful nature and sturdy bony armour.
