The donkeys appear in a variety of poses around the full circumference of the shade. Some stand alert on the hillside, while others graze or look directly towards the viewer. Their elongated ears, simplified forms and gently humorous expressions give the design considerable charm, while the changing positions of the animals create movement across the composition.

The foreground is enriched with detailed botanical imagery, including grasses, nettles, ivy, broad leaves, seed heads and small flowering plants. These finely drawn elements contrast effectively with the broader forms of the hills and animals, adding depth and rewarding close inspection.

The terracotta colourway gives the lampshade a warm, earthy and atmospheric appearance.
