Mister Finch Textile Moth Wall Sculpture with Handwritten Inscription – c.2012–2013 – From the Collection of Sarah Parvin

Description

An original early textile moth by Mister Finch, dating from approximately 2012–2013 and originating from the collection of Sarah Parvin, a friend and supporter of the artist during the formative years of his career.

Provenance is particularly significant. Works acquired directly from individuals associated with Mister Finch’s earliest creative circle are rarely encountered on the market and provide a tangible connection to the period before the artist achieved widespread recognition. As interest in Finch’s work has grown, examples retaining such direct early provenance have become increasingly difficult to source.

Created during a pivotal stage in the artist’s development, this moth belongs to the period when Mister Finch was producing highly individual handmade works using vintage and reclaimed textiles, drawing inspiration from the natural world, folklore, Victorian curiosities and the overlooked beauty of everyday materials. These early creations established the distinctive visual language that would later bring him national and international acclaim.

The sculpture is constructed from carefully selected embroidered and stitched vintage fabrics, forming a beautifully detailed moth with outstretched wings and an elongated textile body. Rich floral embroidery, decorative needlework and layered textile elements create a sense of depth and character that exemplifies the artist’s fascination with transforming humble materials into imaginative and evocative objects.

The reverse retains the original hanging loop and bears the handwritten inscription:

“The soft blanket of twilight comforts the sleeping world.”

The inscription is especially noteworthy. It reflects the poetic and narrative qualities that run throughout Mister Finch’s work and provides an intimate glimpse into the creative spirit of his earliest period. Such handwritten remarks are rarely encountered and reinforce the individuality of the piece.

Mister Finch has become internationally recognised for his intricate textile sculptures and installations inspired by nature, mythology and storytelling. His work has been exhibited widely and is represented in important private collections. Pieces dating from the years immediately preceding his wider recognition are encountered relatively infrequently and offer collectors an opportunity to acquire work from the most formative stage of his artistic career.

Combining an early date, direct Sarah Parvin provenance, a handwritten inscription and one of the artist’s most enduring motifs, this is a particularly appealing example of Mister Finch’s early output and an important survivor from the period in which his distinctive artistic identity was first emerging.

Condition

Very good original condition. Displays only light signs of age and handling consistent with a handmade textile artwork. The embroidered fabrics remain bright and attractive, the construction is sound, and the original hanging loop remains present to the reverse. A well-preserved and highly displayable example.
