Product Description

Musical Chad Valley Mohair Teddy Bear with Reuge Musical Movement, English, c.1955–1962

A charming and increasingly scarce mid-century Chad Valley musical teddy bear, retaining its original maker’s label and fitted with a working Swiss-made Reuge musical movement. Standing approximately 42 cm (16½ inches) high, the bear is constructed in golden mohair plush with a fully jointed body, amber and black eyes, a hand-stitched black nose and rexine-covered paw pads.

The bear retains its original woven manufacturer’s label, printed:

“Hygienic Toys Made in England – The Chad Valley Co. Ltd.”

This label type is associated with Chad Valley production during the 1950s and early 1960s and, together with the bear’s materials, construction and overall design, supports a date of manufacture in the period c.1955–1962.

Founded in 1860, Chad Valley became one of Britain’s most important toy manufacturers and remains among the most recognisable names in the history of English teddy bears. During the post-war period the company continued to produce high-quality mohair bears, combining traditional materials and construction techniques with the evolving tastes of the mid-twentieth-century toy market. Bears retaining their original labels are increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly when accompanied by unusual or specialist features.

Of particular interest is the fitted musical mechanism. The bear retains its original Reuge winding key and the musical movement remains in working order. Founded in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, in 1865, Reuge is regarded as one of the foremost makers of mechanical musical movements and supplied mechanisms for a wide range of luxury musical objects throughout the twentieth century. The incorporation of a Swiss Reuge movement distinguishes this bear from standard Chad Valley production and adds an additional layer of collectability for enthusiasts of both teddy bears and mechanical musical novelties.

The bear survives in notably well-preserved condition. The mohair retains excellent coverage and colour throughout, with only light age-related wear visible upon close inspection. The rexine paw pads remain in very good order, showing minor surface wear commensurate with age and careful use. The original label remains present and legible, while the musical movement functions correctly. A ribbon has been added for display purposes.

Musical Chad Valley bears are encountered considerably less frequently than their standard counterparts and examples retaining a working movement, original label and Reuge key are increasingly difficult to locate. Combining attractive proportions, excellent colour, strong overall condition and a functioning Swiss musical mechanism, this is an appealing and highly collectable example of a post-war English teddy bear.

Why Buy from Hornseys?

For almost fifty years, Hornseys has specialised in sourcing, researching and offering carefully selected works of art, rare books, antiques and collectable objects. Every Chad Valley teddy bear offered for sale is examined individually and catalogued with the same attention to detail that we apply throughout our business.

Expertise and Research

Our descriptions are based on careful first-hand examination and supported by research into Chad Valley manufacturing history, Royal Warrant labels, materials, construction methods and comparable recorded examples. Where possible, we identify date ranges, model characteristics, original features and any later alterations to provide collectors with accurate and transparent information.

Authenticity and Provenance

Authenticity is fundamental to our approach. We assess each bear for period materials, labels, construction details and condition, clearly noting restorations, replacements or associated items where known. We believe buyers should have confidence that every description reflects the object as it is, not as we would like it to be.

Condition Reporting

Vintage teddy bears inevitably show signs of age and use. We provide honest condition assessments, accompanied by comprehensive photography, so collectors can make informed decisions. Any wear, repairs, losses or alterations are described as accurately as possible.

Carefully Curated Selection

We do not aim to offer large quantities of stock. Instead, we focus on finding examples that possess quality, character, historical interest and visual appeal. Whether a bear is a rare early Chad Valley example or a charming post-war companion, it must meet our standards before being offered for sale.
