Product Description

Chad Valley Miniature Mohair Teddy Bear with Red Felt Boots, England, c.1935–1950

A delightful and increasingly scarce miniature Chad Valley teddy bear retaining its original red felt-covered boots and woven Chad Valley Hygienic Toys label. Standing just 19 cm high, this charming bear displays the distinctive character and craftsmanship that have made Chad Valley one of the most collected names in British teddy bear history.

Constructed in golden mohair plush and firmly stuffed with traditional wood wool, the bear features glass eyes, a hand-embroidered nose and mouth, and the broad, flat ears often associated with Chad Valley production during the late pre-war and early post-war years. The surviving woven Chad Valley Hygienic Toys label remains sewn to one foot, providing clear evidence of origin and enhancing the bear’s desirability to collectors.

Particularly appealing are the bear’s original red felt-covered boots, an attractive and less commonly encountered feature among Chad Valley’s smaller teddy bears. Whilst the company is best known for its classic golden bears with neutral felt pads, novelty variations incorporating coloured felt footwear were produced and today are sought after for their individuality and display appeal. The vivid contrast between the warm golden mohair and bright red felt gives this bear considerable charm and personality.

The bear remains in well-loved condition, displaying the honest signs of age expected from a cherished childhood companion. The wood wool filling provides the firm shaping and tactile character associated with earlier British teddy bear manufacture, while the survival of both the original label and unusual felt boots makes this a particularly attractive example.

Small labelled Chad Valley bears continue to enjoy strong collector interest, especially when retaining original features and traditional wood wool filling. Bears with distinctive characteristics such as coloured felt footwear are encountered less frequently than standard production examples and are increasingly sought after by collectors of British soft toys.

Why Buy from Hornseys?

For almost fifty years, Hornseys has specialised in sourcing, researching and offering carefully selected works of art, rare books, antiques and collectable objects. Every Chad Valley teddy bear offered for sale is examined individually and catalogued with the same attention to detail that we apply throughout our business.

Expertise and Research

Our descriptions are based on careful first-hand examination and supported by research into Chad Valley manufacturing history, Royal Warrant labels, materials, construction methods and comparable recorded examples. Where possible, we identify date ranges, model characteristics, original features and any later alterations to provide collectors with accurate and transparent information.

Authenticity and Provenance

Authenticity is fundamental to our approach. We assess each bear for period materials, labels, construction details and condition, clearly noting restorations, replacements or associated items where known. We believe buyers should have confidence that every description reflects the object as it is, not as we would like it to be.

Condition Reporting

Vintage teddy bears inevitably show signs of age and use. We provide honest condition assessments, accompanied by comprehensive photography, so collectors can make informed decisions. Any wear, repairs, losses or alterations are described as accurately as possible.

Carefully Curated Selection

We do not aim to offer large quantities of stock. Instead, we focus on finding examples that possess quality, character, historical interest and visual appeal. Whether a bear is a rare early Chad Valley example or a charming post-war companion, it must meet our standards before being offered for sale.
