Product Description
NORTHUMBERLAND GENERAL ELECTION – Begun 20th June And Ended 6th July 1826
- Graham, Printer, Alnwick, 1826.
Rare printed statistical summary from the famous Northumberland general election of 1826, giving the ward-by-ward poll for the four candidates: Thomas Wentworth Beaumont, Matthew Bell, Henry Thomas Liddell, and Henry George Grey, Viscount Howick.
Single-sheet letterpress table, printed on one side, with contemporary manuscript note to verso identifying it as the Northumberland election, 20 June to 6 July 1826, and recording that the votes were each counted for each candidate. Sheet size approximately 22.8 × 28 cm.
The table divides the county vote by ward — Tindale, Castle, Morpeth, Bambro’, Glendale and Coquetdale — and further separates the returns into plumpers, splits, and total number of votes. The final printed totals give:
Bell — 1880
Liddell — 1562
Beaumont — 1335
Howick — 977
The election was one of the great Northumberland contests of the Georgian period, following the earlier 1826 by-election and involving the principal county interests of Bell, Liddell, Beaumont and Grey/Howick. It generated a large body of printed political ephemera, but this statistical ward-summary sheet is of particular interest as a concise printed record of the final electoral arithmetic.
Printed by J. Graham of Alnwick, an important local printer of Northumberland election material.
Condition: Old folds, very light creasing and minor handling wear only. Near fine overall.
No exact institutional or commercial copy located. Apparently unrecorded as a separate item.
