Produced as an exclusive commission for the renowned British specialist shop, Teddy Bears of Witney, this 35 cm bear was the very first faithful replica of the legendary red Alfonzo. The original bear was a gift from Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia to his daughter, Princess Xenia, in 1908, and famously accompanied her into exile in England following the Russian Revolution.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Standing at 35 cm (approximately 14 inches), this 1990 edition is masterfully crafted from a striking bright red mohair that captures the unique hue of the imperial original. In keeping with the high standards of traditional German toy-making, the bear is firmly stuffed with excelsior (fine wood shavings), giving it a nostalgic “crunch” and a substantial, weighted feel. It features a classic five-way jointed body, allowing for a variety of traditional poses, and is finished with large, soulful black glass eyes and hand-embroidered black thread for the nose, mouth, and claws. This bear also has an internal growler.

The bear’s most distinctive feature is its meticulously detailed Cossack outfit, which consists of a two-piece tunic and trousers set. The garments are fashioned from a pale tan cotton, accented with elegant cream-coloured edging. This costume is a precise recreation of the Russian imperial military style worn by the 1908 original. The bear’s paws are finished with high-quality wool felt pads, providing a soft contrast to the vibrant, slightly coarse texture of the red mohair.

As a certified Steiff limited edition, this Alfonzo was restricted to a worldwide release of 5,000 pieces. Each bear is identified by the prestigious white ear tag and a gold-plated “Button in Ear,” indicating its status as a collector’s replica.
