Teddy Bear Baby Alfonzo: A Brief Description

The Steiff Baby Alfonzo (EAN 653773) is a distinguished collector’s piece released in 1995 as a limited edition for the renowned British retailer, Teddy Bears of Witney. This 24 cm bear serves as a faithful, smaller-scale tribute to one of the most famous teddy bears in history: the original red mohair Alfonzo. That historic bear was a gift from the Russian Grand Duke George Mikhailovich to his daughter, Princess Xenia Georgievna, in 1908, and it famously survived the Russian Revolution when the Princess brought it to England.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Crafted with exceptional attention to historical accuracy, this 1995 edition is made from premium sparkling red mohair with a slightly distressed finish to evoke an antique aesthetic. In a nod to traditional early 20th-century toy-making, the bear is firmly stuffed with excelsior (fine wood shavings), giving it a sturdy weight and a nostalgic “crunch” when handled. Its features include striking black glass eyes and hand-embroidered claws, nose, and mouth in black thread, all set against pale tan wool felt paw pads.

A defining characteristic of this bear is its meticulously tailored Cossack outfit, which replicates the regal attire worn by the original 1908 bear. The costume is typically fashioned from silk sateen and adorned with intricate trimmings and miniature buttons. This outfit represents the traditional dress of the Russian imperial court, firmly rooting the bear in its royal provenance and making it a standout piece in any display.

Presentation and Significance

As a certified Steiff limited edition, Baby Alfonzo was restricted to a worldwide release of 5,000 pieces. Each bear carries the iconic white ear tag secured by a gold-plated “Button in Ear,” denoting its status as a specialty item. Originally issued in a malachite-patterned presentation box with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, this bear remains a quintessential example of Steiff’s ability to blend high-quality German craftsmanship with a poignant historical narrative.
