Having seen service at Dunkirk, West Africa, Sicily, Arnhem, Egypt, Palestine and Malaya, Major Dover retired from the army with over 100 parachute drops to his credit. He was one of the first to join the 1st Parachute Regiment, had been wounded five times and had demonstrated outstanding acts of ingenuity and bravery. His actions in Sicily where he, carrying a severe leg wound, and his corporal lived for 23 days solely on apples and water whilst disrupting the enemy supply lines earned him the Military Cross.
