Autograph Letter Signed (“Granville”), Walmer Castle, Deal – 14 February – 1874?

Single-page autograph letter signed on headed stationery of Walmer Castle, Deal, with manuscript verso in another hand. 11.2 × 17.9 cm.

A rare and attractive autograph note signed by one of the most influential Liberal statesmen of the Victorian period, written from Walmer Castle and apparently dated 14 February 1874. Although the final two digits of the year are not entirely clear, the date appears to read “’74”, placing the letter at a pivotal moment in British political history, immediately following the fall of Gladstone’s first administration and at the close of Granville’s second tenure as Foreign Secretary.

Addressed to an unidentified correspondent, whose surname appears to read “Glantine” (or similar), Granville writes:

“Would your boy like a nomination to compete for the F.O.”

before signing:

“Yours ever,
Granville.”

The abbreviation “F.O.” almost certainly refers to the Foreign Office, making the letter a revealing survival relating to Victorian public service recruitment and political patronage. The note appears to concern the nomination of a young man to compete for entry into the diplomatic or civil service establishment, illustrating the personal networks through which opportunities were often communicated during the nineteenth century.

Granville was among the most important Liberal politicians of his generation. A close ally of William Ewart Gladstone, he served three times as Foreign Secretary and twice as Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Lords. Throughout the middle decades of the nineteenth century he occupied a central position within British government, playing a significant role in both domestic politics and foreign affairs. Few Victorian statesmen enjoyed such prolonged access to the highest levels of power.

The apparent date of February 1874 is particularly interesting. The general election of that year brought Gladstone’s first ministry to an end and marked a significant transition in Liberal politics. If the date is correctly interpreted, the letter belongs to this important political moment and reflects Granville’s continuing involvement in matters connected with the Foreign Office and public appointments.

The note is written on headed stationery of Walmer Castle, the historic residence associated with the Lord Wardens of the Cinque Ports. The presence of the Walmer Castle heading lends additional interest and visual appeal to the piece, linking it to one of the most celebrated official residences in Britain and to the political culture of Victorian Kent.

Manuscript verso in another hand, bearing a later pencil annotation:

“The above is Right Hon W. E. Gladstone.”

The attribution has not been verified and is offered without guarantee. While the fragment appears to be nineteenth-century political correspondence, no claim is made that it is in Gladstone’s hand.

Autograph letters of Granville are considerably scarcer than those of many Victorian prime ministers and cabinet ministers. Examples combining Walmer Castle provenance, Foreign Office content and evidence of political recommendation or patronage are especially desirable, providing insight into the practical operation of government and advancement within the Victorian establishment.

Condition: Single sheet on headed Walmer Castle stationery. Old folds as issued, light creasing and minor handling wear. Some marginal roughness and small losses at the left edge, not affecting the text or signature. Ink remains dark and legible throughout. Good condition overall.

A desirable Victorian political autograph, connecting Walmer Castle, the Foreign Office and one of Gladstone’s closest colleagues, while offering a rare glimpse into the mechanisms of recommendation, patronage and public service recruitment in nineteenth-century Britain.
