AZAMGARH GUIDE MAP – Survey of India – First Edition – 1977

Large official Survey of India folding guide map of Azamgarh, issued at a scale of 1:20,000. First edition, 1977, surveyed 1975–76. Sheet size approximately 58 x 43.8 cm.

A detailed official urban map of Azamgarh produced during the post-Independence period, recording the historic town and surrounding districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh before the major later twentieth-century expansion of the region. The map shows roads, railways, bridges, rivers, public buildings, police lines, educational institutions, hospitals, parks, cinemas, industrial areas, administrative offices and other places of interest.

The map records the course of the Tons River and associated waterways running through the town, together with railway infrastructure including the Shahganj Branch metre gauge line. Numerous administrative and civic features are identified, including courts, district offices, customs and excise facilities, agricultural institutions and police compounds. A substantial printed index lists banks, institutions, dharmashalas, hospitals, gardens, offices, notable persons and places of worship.

Produced under the direction of Surveyor General Kishori Lal Khosla and printed by the Survey of India Printing Group, the map offers a detailed snapshot of Azamgarh during the 1970s, documenting the urban and administrative geography of an important district centre in Uttar Pradesh.

Condition: Folding map complete, with expected fold lines, light creasing and minor handling wear. Some light age toning and small marginal marks. Overall near fine.

Not unrecorded: institutional holdings of Survey of India guide maps include Azamgarh examples and related North Indian city guide maps of the period. Scarce in commerce, particularly in complete original folding form.

A detailed official Survey of India city map of Azamgarh, of interest for Indian cartography, Uttar Pradesh regional history, urban geography and post-Independence administrative development.
