BANGALORE GUIDE MAP – Survey of India – Second Edition – 1983

Large-format official Survey of India folding guide map of Bangalore, issued at a scale of 1:20,000. Second edition, 1983. Printed bilingual Hindi and English pictorial wrappers, with photographic view of Vidhana Soudha to the front cover. Sheet size approximately 100.3 x 114.3 cm.

A detailed official city map of Bangalore produced during a pivotal period in the city’s late twentieth-century expansion, before the transformation of Bangalore into one of India’s principal technology and global business centres. The map records the city in the early 1980s, showing roads, railways, public buildings, residential districts, industrial areas, lakes, parks, government institutions, cantonment areas, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The map includes inset plans of central civic areas and the Bangalore neighbourhood, together with detailed cartographic information at a practical urban scale. Its value lies both as a navigational document and as a record of Bangalore’s urban form before the major phases of late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century growth.

This edition is specifically significant as a Survey of India official city guide map from 1983. Such large folding maps were issued for practical use and are consequently uncommon in collectible condition, particularly with the original wrapper retained. The present example is also of interest because contemporary urban and geotechnical studies have referred to the 1983 Survey of India Bangalore Guide Map as a source for later digitised mapping of the city.

Condition: Original printed front wrapper present but detached. Folding map complete and in very good plus condition, with expected fold lines, light handling wear, and minor age toning. Wrappers worn, chipped and creased, with the front wrapper detached as noted.

No institutional copy of this precise 1983 second edition has been traced in the British Library, Library Hub Discover, or WorldCat databases. It therefore appears to be apparently unrecorded institutionally.

A scarce and substantial official Survey of India map of Bangalore, of strong interest for collectors of Indian cartography, urban history, post-Independence planning, and the development of modern Bangalore.
