Beswick Beatrix Potter – Aunt Pettitoes Figurine – c.1973-1974

Description

An original Beswick figure depicting Aunt Pettitoes, the mother of Pigling Bland and his siblings from Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Pigling Bland, produced under licence from Frederick Warne & Co.

The figure shows Aunt Pettitoes standing in her distinctive pale blue striped dress with a broad frilled collar and blue-spotted bonnet, carrying a small pail at her side. Her softly modelled pink face, upright ears and domestic costume are finished in the restrained pastel palette characteristic of Beswick’s Beatrix Potter figures.

The model was designed by Albert Hallam and introduced by Beswick in 1970. It remained in production for a number of years, during which several different factory backstamps were used.

The underside of this example carries the brown printed inscription:

ENGLAND”

The form of this brown printed backstamp is associated with the earlier 1970s production of the model, approximately 1973–1974. Unlike some later Beswick Beatrix Potter marks, it does not carry a printed copyright year, making the backstamp itself important in establishing the approximate production period.

Aunt Pettitoes is an appealing member of Beswick’s extensive Beatrix Potter series, particularly attractive for the delicately painted costume, characteristic bonnet and immediately recognisable domestic pose.

Condition

Very good condition. No obvious chips, cracks or restoration visible from inspection. There is some light expected rubbing and marking to the underside of the base consistent with age and previous display. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
