Eleanor Grosch – City Bikes – Rittenhouse – Digital Print – Philadelphia Cycling Art
Description
An attractive digital print by American illustrator and designer Eleanor Grosch, entitled City Bikes: Rittenhouse, combining two recurring elements of the artist’s work: cycling and the architecture of Philadelphia.
The composition depicts a road bicycle standing outside a red-brick townhouse, its brilliant blue door and shutters framed by mature trees and dense foliage. Grosch reduces the streetscape to a carefully controlled arrangement of geometric shapes, pattern and colour. The bicycle itself is rendered with remarkable economy, while the brickwork, pavement and patterned foliage introduce texture without compromising the clarity of the overall design. The result has the character of a modern American travel poster while remaining unmistakably part of Grosch’s distinctive illustrative vocabulary.
The title refers to Rittenhouse, one of Philadelphia’s best-known central neighbourhoods. The subject has particular relevance within Grosch’s work: after studying Fine Art at the University of South Florida, she relocated to Philadelphia in 2005, and cycling became closely connected with her experience of the city. In a 2008 interview she specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle. Her later work has continued to explore cycling and Philadelphia, including public artwork celebrating recreational activity along the city’s Schuylkill River Trail.
Grosch has developed an established career in American illustration and graphic design, working for clients including Keds, Urban Outfitters, Chronicle Books, San Diego Zoo and The Los Angeles Times. Her work is characterised by simplified forms, bold but carefully balanced colour and a strong mid-century Modernist influence. She was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008, while her cycling illustrations have received recognition from Communication Arts.
City Bikes: Rittenhouse is particularly appealing as an example of Grosch’s ability to turn an everyday urban scene into a highly decorative composition. It will appeal both to collectors of contemporary American illustration and to those interested in cycling art, Philadelphia, architecture and modern graphic design.
