Eleanor Grosch – City Bikes – Art Museum – Digital Print – Philadelphia Cycling Art

Description

A striking signed digital print by American illustrator and designer Eleanor Grosch, entitled City Bikes: Art Museum, combining Grosch’s distinctive cycling imagery with one of the great architectural landmarks of Philadelphia.

The composition depicts a beautifully simplified red road bicycle standing at the foot of the monumental steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rising symmetrically behind it is the museum’s imposing Classical façade and columned portico. Grosch deliberately contrasts the delicate geometry of the bicycle with the scale and formality of the architecture, while the extensive horizontal lines of the famous steps create both perspective and rhythm across the image.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has occupied its landmark building on Benjamin Franklin Parkway since the 1920s and is one of the city’s defining cultural institutions. Grosch’s choice of the museum is especially appropriate within her City Bikes imagery, in which bicycles become a means of exploring and celebrating the character of Philadelphia.

Cycling has genuine personal significance within Grosch’s work. Originally from Florida, she studied Fine Art at the University of South Florida before relocating to Philadelphia in 2005. In an early interview, Grosch specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle, describing the city’s scale as particularly suited to cycling.

Grosch has subsequently established a successful career in American illustration and graphic design. Her work is particularly associated with simplified forms, strong shapes, pattern and carefully controlled colour, creating a distinctive contemporary interpretation of mid-century graphic design. Her clients have included Giro, Keds, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and San Diego Zoo, and she was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008.

Signed by Eleanor Grosch and bears her blindstamp. The combination of cycling, Philadelphia architecture and Grosch’s highly recognisable graphic language makes it an attractive work for collectors of contemporary American illustration, cycling art and modern urban imagery.
