An original signed digital print by the American illustrator and artist Eleanor Grosch, celebrating the atmosphere, spectacle and visual culture of the Tour de France.

A group of cyclists rides away from the viewer through a dense corridor of spectators, with a rider in a yellow jersey occupying the centre of the composition. The figure immediately evokes the maillot jaune, the yellow jersey worn by the overall leader of the Tour de France, while another rider in a white jersey with red polka dots recalls the race’s celebrated King of the Mountains classification.

The title, “Allez”, is particularly appropriate. Meaning broadly “Go!” or “Come on!” in French, it is one of the characteristic cries heard from spectators lining the roads of the Tour and captures the direct, exuberant relationship between the race and its enormous roadside audience.

Grosch builds the composition around that interaction. The cyclists form a narrow procession through the centre, while spectators press in from either side, their faces, arms and clothing reduced to brightly coloured fragments of red, blue, yellow, black and flesh tones. Raised hands and angular forms create an impression of movement and noise without the need for detailed facial expression.

The road itself becomes part of the graphic design. Large white letters spelling “ALLEZ” appear repeatedly across the surface beneath the cyclists, recalling the painted messages and encouragement traditionally applied to mountain roads during the Tour de France. The lettering reinforces both the title and the sense that the riders are passing through a landscape temporarily transformed by the race.

The central yellow-clad cyclist provides the strongest visual anchor. Seen from behind and positioned directly on the vertical axis of the composition, the rider advances towards distant blue mountain forms while the crowd closes around the route. The result captures one of the defining experiences of the Tour: riders climbing through densely packed spectators towards the high mountains.

The inclusion of both the yellow jersey and the polka-dot jersey gives the print particularly strong Tour de France associations. Grosch does not appear to be recording one specific historical stage or individual rider; instead, she distils the race into a highly recognisable combination of leader’s jerseys, mountain landscape, spectators and roadside encouragement.

The composition demonstrates Grosch’s characteristic economy of form. Cyclists, bicycles and spectators are reduced to simplified silhouettes and geometric shapes, while carefully controlled colour distinguishes the principal figures from the crowd. The restrained turquoise ground allows the red, yellow, white and black elements to stand out with exceptional clarity.

Although digitally produced, subtle variations of texture across the surface give the work a tactile, print-like appearance. The strong flat shapes, simplified anatomy and decorative handling of space reveal Grosch’s affinity with mid-century Modernist illustration and classic European travel and sporting posters.

An especially lively and decorative example of Grosch’s cycling work, with strong appeal to collectors of Tour de France memorabilia, cycling art and contemporary graphic illustration.

Cycling has genuine personal significance within Grosch’s work. Originally from Florida, she studied Fine Art at the University of South Florida before relocating to Philadelphia in 2005. In an early interview, Grosch specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle, describing the city’s scale as particularly suited to cycling.

Grosch has subsequently established a successful career in American illustration and graphic design. Her work is particularly associated with simplified forms, strong shapes, pattern and carefully controlled colour, creating a distinctive contemporary interpretation of mid-century graphic design. Her clients have included Giro, Keds, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and San Diego Zoo, and she was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008.
