Description

An original digital print by the American illustrator and artist Eleanor Grosch from her City Bikes series, depicting a cyclist and bicycle within a highly stylised landscape of sweeping roads, wooded hills and patterned vegetation.

A solitary cyclist stands beside a road bicycle in the lower left of the composition, looking out across a broad landscape formed from overlapping geometric planes. Grosch reduces the distant hills and woodland to flattened areas of green and grey, punctuated by repeated triangular tree forms, while a curving pale road sweeps through the foreground and draws the viewer into the scene.

The cyclist is treated with Grosch’s characteristic economy of line and form. A pale blue jersey, dark shorts and a simplified cycling cap provide just enough information to establish the figure, while the bicycle is described largely through its slender black frame and sweeping circular wheels. The restrained treatment of the figure allows the surrounding landscape to remain equally important within the composition.

Particularly effective is Grosch’s use of decorative pattern. Stylised foliage borders the road on the right, while larger leaves descend from the upper edge of the image and frame the open blue sky. The combination of soft pink, muted green, blue and charcoal creates a quieter and more contemplative mood than some of Grosch’s more urban cycling subjects.

The work is typical of Grosch’s distinctive graphic language, in which bicycles, figures, landscapes and architecture are translated into clean shapes, flattened perspective and carefully controlled areas of colour. Although produced digitally, the deliberately textured passages of colour give the image a tactile, print-like quality rather than the appearance of a straightforward computer-generated illustration.

As part of Grosch’s City Bikes series, the print belongs to an important strand of her work devoted to cycling and the visual culture surrounding the bicycle. Here, however, the emphasis moves away from the explicitly urban environment towards a quieter landscape setting, presenting cycling as both transportation and recreation.

Cycling has genuine personal significance within Grosch’s work. Originally from Florida, she studied Fine Art at the University of South Florida before relocating to Philadelphia in 2005. In an early interview, Grosch specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle, describing the city’s scale as particularly suited to cycling.

Grosch has subsequently established a successful career in American illustration and graphic design. Her work is particularly associated with simplified forms, strong shapes, pattern and carefully controlled colour, creating a distinctive contemporary interpretation of mid-century graphic design. Her clients have included Giro, Keds, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and San Diego Zoo, and she was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008.

Condition: Fine condition. The printed surface is clean and well preserved, with strong, unfaded colour. Not signed.
