Description

An original signed digital print by the American illustrator and artist Eleanor Grosch, depicting a bicycle within the landscaped surroundings of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park.

The composition is constructed from a carefully balanced series of architectural, natural and decorative forms. A bicycle stands against an ornate white railing in the upper section of the image, framed by clipped greenery and an expanse of pale blue sky. Below, Grosch introduces a broader landscape of water, foliage and brickwork, creating a layered interpretation of the park rather than a conventional topographical view.

Particularly effective is the way in which the bicycle is integrated into the decorative ironwork of the railing. Wheels, frame and ornamental scrollwork overlap to create an intricate network of circles and lines, while the restrained palette of pale blue, turquoise, green, ochre and muted brick red gives the image a calm, almost architectural character. The stylised water in the lower right is indicated by repeated horizontal lines, contrasting with the stronger geometric structure of the upper composition.

The work is characteristic of Grosch’s distinctive graphic language, in which bicycles, architecture and landscape are reduced to simplified forms, controlled colour and carefully organised pattern. Although produced digitally, the surface incorporates deliberately textured areas which soften the geometry and give the image a tactile, print-like quality.

Fairmount Park is especially interesting within Grosch’s cycling imagery because it brings together two recurring elements of her work: the bicycle and the urban landscape of Philadelphia. Rather than treating the bicycle simply as a sporting object, Grosch places it naturally within the visual fabric of the city and its green spaces.

Cycling has genuine personal significance within Grosch’s work. Originally from Florida, she studied Fine Art at the University of South Florida before relocating to Philadelphia in 2005. In an early interview, Grosch specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle, describing the city’s scale as particularly suited to cycling.

Grosch has subsequently established a successful career in American illustration and graphic design. Her work is particularly associated with simplified forms, strong shapes, pattern and carefully controlled colour, creating a distinctive contemporary interpretation of mid-century graphic design. Her clients have included Giro, Keds, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and San Diego Zoo, and she was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008.
