Description

An original digital print by the American illustrator and artist Eleanor Grosch, inspired by the Vuelta a España and the distinctive landscape and visual culture of Spanish road racing.

Two cyclists race across the foreground of a highly stylised Spanish landscape, their bodies and bicycles reduced to Grosch’s characteristic arrangement of clean geometric forms, sweeping circular wheels and carefully controlled blocks of colour. One rider, in red and black, leads slightly to the left, while the larger foreground cyclist in pale blue, burgundy and black gives the composition a particularly strong sense of movement and depth.

Behind the riders rises a simplified castellated structure, its towers and battlements rendered in muted cream, grey and deep red. Above it stands the silhouette of a bull, one of the most immediately recognisable visual symbols associated with Spain. Grosch combines these architectural and cultural references with an abstract mountainous landscape and a pale circular sun or moon, creating an image which evokes Spain without attempting to reproduce a single literal location.

The road itself is indicated by a loose band of irregular stone or brick-like forms passing beneath the bicycles. This textured element contrasts effectively with the otherwise sharply defined geometry of the riders and architecture and gives the composition a subtle suggestion of the rough roads and historic landscapes through which professional European stage racing developed.

The Vuelta a España, first held in 1935, is one of professional cycling’s three Grand Tours alongside the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. Its route has traditionally combined demanding mountain stages, high temperatures, dramatic changes in landscape and racing through historic Spanish towns and cities. Grosch distils these associations into an economical visual vocabulary of cyclists, fortress architecture, mountains and the bull.

The composition is particularly characteristic of Grosch’s approach to cycling imagery. Rather than illustrating a specific racing incident, she captures the identity and atmosphere of the event through a carefully selected group of symbols. The riders retain enough anatomical and mechanical detail to remain immediately recognisable, yet both figures and bicycles become integral parts of the larger geometric design.

The colour palette is especially effective. Muted ochre and sand tones provide the ground, against which areas of terracotta red, burgundy, cream, pale blue and black create a distinctly warm Mediterranean character. The overlapping planes of the mountains and architectural forms lend depth without compromising the deliberately flattened, poster-like quality of the image.

Although digitally produced, subtle variations of texture throughout the background, clothing and landscape give the surface a tactile, print-like character. Grosch’s combination of simplified form, controlled colour and graphic pattern reflects her strong affinity with mid-century Modernist illustration and travel-poster design.

Cycling has genuine personal significance within Grosch’s work. Originally from Florida, she studied Fine Art at the University of South Florida before relocating to Philadelphia in 2005. In an early interview, Grosch specifically discussed her enjoyment of travelling around Philadelphia by bicycle, describing the city’s scale as particularly suited to cycling.

Grosch has subsequently established a successful career in American illustration and graphic design. Her work is particularly associated with simplified forms, strong shapes, pattern and carefully controlled colour, creating a distinctive contemporary interpretation of mid-century graphic design. Her clients have included Giro, Keds, Urban Outfitters, Starbucks and San Diego Zoo, and she was selected as one of Print magazine’s New Visual Artists in 2008.
