Product Description

FOSTER, Myles Birket Foster (1825–1899) – Autograph Letter Signed to “Dudley” – 11 March 1875.

Autograph letter signed, one page. 9.9 × 15.2 cm.

A charming autograph note from the celebrated Victorian artist and illustrator Myles Birket Foster.

Writing on 11 March 1875, Foster apologises for his delayed reply, explaining that:

“Academy pictures & indigestion have prevented my writing sooner.”

He further remarks that he is entertaining “the Bishop of Winchester & a large party on Monday” but nevertheless promises:

“By all means send — I will do all I can to come.”

The letter provides an attractive glimpse into Foster’s busy social and artistic life during the height of his career. The reference to “Academy pictures” almost certainly relates to preparations connected with the annual Royal Academy exhibition, one of the principal events of the Victorian art world.

Birket Foster was among the most popular British artists of the nineteenth century, renowned for his idyllic watercolours of the English countryside and for his prolific work as a book illustrator. His distinctive style helped shape the visual image of rural Victorian England and remains highly collectible today.

Apparently unrecorded.

Condition: Folded as sent, with light creasing and minor handling wear. Very good condition overall.

A pleasing and personal note by one of the most beloved Victorian landscape artists, with references to the Royal Academy and contemporary social life.
