Description

A rare and highly evocative surviving broadside from the fiercely contested Northumberland parliamentary election of 1826, one of the most acrimonious county elections of the late Georgian period.

Printed on 10 April 1826, this broadside forms part of the extraordinary printed war that developed between the supporters of the principal candidates, notably Matthew Bell, Robert William Brandling and Henry Thomas Liddell. Throughout the campaign, voters were inundated with addresses, handbills, satirical verses, open letters and anonymous attacks, many issued daily and distributed throughout Newcastle, Alnwick, Shields and the wider county.

The present broadside is directed “To Verax and his Twin-Brother R. W. Brandling”, responding to accusations and political commentary circulated during the election. Written in a highly combative style, it attacks the credibility of its opponents and defends Matthew Bell and his supporters against allegations made during the contest.

The text provides a vivid illustration of Georgian electoral culture before the Reform Act of 1832. Elections were often lengthy, expensive and intensely personal affairs in which political disputes frequently descended into public accusations concerning character, family influence, patronage networks and local loyalties. The language employed here demonstrates the often ferocious tone of county politics during the period.

Particularly notable is the discussion of the funeral of a relative of Bell and the resulting controversy concerning attendance, political obligations and electioneering conduct. Such apparently private matters were readily transformed into political ammunition in the struggle for votes amongst the county freeholders.

The broadside concludes with a substantial postscript rebutting claims concerning Bell, Brandling and their respective supporters, providing valuable insight into the mechanics of political campaigning and public persuasion in early nineteenth-century Northumberland.
