Description
A rare and visually striking Northumberland election broadside issued during the fiercely contested county election of 1826, directed against the independent candidate Thomas Wentworth Beaumont and employing one of the most effective techniques of Georgian political propaganda: the public question left deliberately unanswered.
Printed in large display type beneath the dramatic title “Two Puzzling Questions to Mr. Beaumont”, the broadside reproduces part of a statement attributed to Beaumont dated Warren’s Hotel, January 19th, 1824, in which he declared himself unable to continue acting as a parliamentary representative until he had refuted certain allegations made against him.
The anonymous author then poses the challenge that forms the entirety of the broadside’s political purpose:
“When were these allegations repelled? And where?”
The simplicity of the attack is particularly effective. Rather than offering lengthy argument, the broadside seeks to cast doubt upon Beaumont’s credibility by reminding freeholders of an earlier controversy and inviting readers to draw their own conclusions regarding whether the allegations had ever been satisfactorily answered.
Its bold typography, minimal text and provocative questioning reveal the increasingly sophisticated use of political print during the late Georgian period, when broadsides were designed to be read quickly, displayed publicly and circulated widely throughout the county.
Historical Context
The Northumberland election of 1826 ranks among the most remarkable county contests of the early nineteenth century. The campaign generated an extraordinary volume of printed ephemera including addresses, squibs, songs, satirical verses, committee notices, handbills and broadsides.
The election saw competing factions attempt to influence one of the largest county electorates in England through extensive use of the press and inexpensive printed literature. Candidates and their supporters employed printers in Newcastle, Alnwick and elsewhere to distribute political arguments throughout the county’s towns and villages.
Thomas Wentworth Beaumont occupied a distinctive position within Northumberland politics. Possessed of immense wealth and substantial landed influence, he frequently presented himself as an independent political figure capable of standing apart from established party interests. Such claims naturally attracted scrutiny from opponents, who sought to undermine his public reputation through publications such as the present broadside.
Political Ephemera and Electoral Propaganda
The present broadside demonstrates the evolution of electioneering literature during the decades preceding the Reform Act of 1832.
Rather than presenting detailed political arguments, it relies upon insinuation, public memory and rhetorical questioning. Such pieces were intended to provoke discussion among freeholders and encourage uncertainty regarding a candidate’s suitability for office.
The use of oversized typography and a concise message made broadsides particularly effective forms of political communication. They could be posted in public places, read aloud in inns and market towns, and quickly absorbed by voters throughout the county.
As ephemeral publications intended for temporary use, comparatively few survive today.
