O’CONNELL, JOHN (1810-1858) – Autograph Letter Signed to Walter Scott of the Reform Club – 52 Parliament Street – Westminster – 1 May 1840

Autograph letter signed (“John O’Connell”), one page. 11.7 × 18.3 cm.

A good autograph letter from John O’Connell, eldest son of the great Irish political leader Daniel O’Connell (“The Liberator”), written from 52 Parliament Street, Westminster, during the height of his father’s political influence and parliamentary career.

Addressed to Walter Scott at the Reform Club, the letter concerns the transmission of a financial draft. Of particular interest is O’Connell’s explicit reference to his father:

“My father, Mr O’Connell, in sending me the enclosed…”

John explains that he has been instructed by his father to forward the enclosed draft and requests that the recipient arrange payment through the Club’s banker. Although the content is financial rather than political, the letter offers a direct glimpse into the personal and practical affairs surrounding Daniel O’Connell’s parliamentary circle.

John O’Connell was the eldest surviving son of Daniel O’Connell and one of his closest political associates. Educated at Clongowes Wood College and Trinity College Dublin, he served as Member of Parliament for Youghal and later for Limerick City. Throughout much of his career he acted as a trusted lieutenant to his father, participating in the campaigns for Catholic Emancipation and Repeal of the Union. Following Daniel O’Connell’s death in 1847, John remained active in Irish nationalist politics, though he never attained his father’s extraordinary political stature.

The letter’s destination is equally notable. Founded in 1836, the Reform Club rapidly became one of the principal centres of Liberal and reformist political life in Victorian Britain, closely associated with parliamentary reform, Whig politics and the wider reform movement. The present letter therefore links two significant strands of nineteenth-century political history: the O’Connell movement and the reformist milieu of Westminster.

Letters directly referencing Daniel O’Connell are increasingly sought after, particularly where they illuminate the day-to-day operation of his political and personal networks. The present example survives from the period when O’Connell was one of the most influential political figures in the United Kingdom and was actively pursuing the cause of Irish Repeal.

Apparently unrecorded.

Condition: Single sheet. Folded as sent, with light creasing, mild toning and minor handling wear. Clean and entirely legible. Very good condition overall.

A desirable O’Connell family letter linking Daniel O’Connell, his eldest son John O’Connell, Parliament Street and the Reform Club at the height of Victorian reform politics.
