RISHIKESH GUIDE MAP – Survey of India – Second Edition – 1990

Large folding colour-printed map on thin paper, scale 1:20,000, overall sheet size approximately 54.7 × 46.7 cm, folding into original plain card covers. Detailed topographical and urban survey of Rishikesh, Lakshmanjhula and adjoining sections of the upper Ganges valley, showing roads, bridges, contouring, forests, institutional buildings, ashrams, temples, hospitals and administrative infrastructure. Extensive printed index of places of interest at left, including major religious institutions and pilgrimage sites. Includes inset map, “See Rishikesh”, at 1:60,000. Surveyed 1985–86; published under the direction of Lieutenant-General Surinder Mohan Chadha, Surveyor General of India. Marginal note records: “1st Edition 1976; 2nd 1990”. Printed at the Dehra Dun office of the Survey of India.

Condition: very good plus. Clean and unusually well-preserved example with only light fold wear and minor handling marks. Covers sound and attached. Colours fresh and strong.

An uncommon late twentieth-century Survey of India guide map documenting Rishikesh immediately before its transformation into a major international centre of yoga tourism and global spiritual travel. The map captures the sacred and institutional geography of the town at the close of the pre-liberalisation era, recording dozens of named ashrams, religious schools, temples and pilgrimage facilities lining both banks of the Ganges.

Particularly notable for its detailed depiction of the Lakshmanjhula sector and the dense concentration of religious establishments that would become internationally famous during the explosion of Western interest in yoga and Hindu spirituality during the late twentieth century. The map also preserves the physical layout of the town before the rapid commercial and infrastructural expansion of the 1990s and 2000s.

The sequence of Survey of India “Guide Maps” issued during the 1970s–1990s remains poorly documented bibliographically, with many editions surviving in very small numbers. Institutional holdings are sparse. Copies are recorded for the earlier 1976 first edition, but this revised 1990 second edition appears substantially scarcer and may be apparently unrecorded institutionally in this specific form.
