Teddy Bear 1912: A Brief Description

Teddy Bear 1912, EAN 406805, is a replica bear made from black mohair. He has an internal growler and was produced in 1992. The design echoes early Steiff bears, particularly the bears made in or around 1912. This exclusive piece is limited to 7,000 units worldwide, making it a cherished item for collectors.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The mohair used for its coat is deep black, thick and plush, giving the bear a classic vintage appearance with a sheen that darkens in shadow and shows lighter highlights where the fibres are brushed or worn. The pile is of medium length, long enough to give a tactile softness, short enough to keep the lines of the bear’s body well defined. Its construction is fully jointed, enabling posing in seated or semi-standing positions, although due to its weight and softness it remains primarily a display bear. The stuffing is firm, sufficient to maintain shape without being rigid; this gives the bear some give but retains volume in the limbs and torso. The face is of traditional Steiff character. The eyes are set close enough to give an expressive, solemn gaze. The nose is hand-stitched in dark thread, with a small, downward curve giving a gentle mouth beneath. The ears are rounded, sewn on symmetrically, moderately sized relative to head so they neither dominate nor appear too small. The paw pads are a pale cream felt, contrasting with the plenitude of black fur; the toes are separated by stitched claw lines, again dark thread, which are subtle but precise. The pads are slightly curved, giving a natural resting shape to the feet and hands. Seams at joints are well hidden beneath overlapping fur, blending the layout of limbs into the body so that vertical lines are softened.

The bear is dressed in a sailor-style outfit made from navy cloth, trimmed with red edging and gold coloured buttons. This jacket is tailored to his shape so that it fits without gaping; the jacket gives structure, shoulders and chest shaped to accommodate the bear’s form, sleeves long enough to cover the arms but not hiding his paws. The sailor outfit suggests a nautical or seafaring theme, lending the bear a narrative of voyage or tradition. An additional distinguishing detail is the Steiff pendant worn around the neck; it is a signifier of authenticity and decor, not merely decoration.

Presentation and Significance

This handsome bear carries the Steiff’s hallmark “button in ear” which is a standard feature signalling genuine Steiff manufacture. Teddy Bear 1912 gives an impression of quiet dignity; its posture, face, and clothing all combine to evoke the look of an early 20th-century sea-going gentleman of plush. The overall aesthetic is one of maritime elegance combined with classic teddy bear charm. Teddy Bear 1912 suggests a character who has sailed many seas—his expression, posture and apparel all work together to give him personality, with just enough detail in the mohair, stitching and costume to make him a strong display piece for collectors.
