The Comets – Visitors From Space – First Edition – 1973 – Signed By Patrick Moore
By Patrick Moore
Chatham: Keith Reid Ltd., 1973
First UK edition. Signed and inscribed by the author.
Octavo, original black cloth boards in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout. A highly attractive signed first edition of one of Patrick Moore’s most engaging and evocative popular astronomy works, inscribed by Moore to the front free endpaper:
“To Peter, with best wishes / Patrick / 1973 December 8.”
Published during a period of renewed public fascination with observational astronomy and celestial events, The Comets: Visitors From Space presents Patrick Moore at his most accessible and enthusiastic. Written for both amateur astronomers and general readers, the book combines scientific explanation, astronomical history and practical observation in a compact but richly informative study of one of the solar system’s most mysterious phenomena.
For centuries comets occupied a unique place within human imagination: interpreted variously as omens, divine warnings, cosmic spectacles and scientific puzzles. Moore traces this long cultural and astronomical history with characteristic clarity and energy, moving from ancient observations and medieval superstition through to the development of modern cometary science in the twentieth century. The result is not simply a technical account of comets, but a broader meditation on humanity’s changing relationship with the night sky.
At the time of publication in 1973, Patrick Moore was already firmly established as Britain’s best-known astronomer. Through the BBC’s The Sky at Night, which he had presented since 1957, Moore became one of the most influential popularisers of astronomy in modern history. His distinctive broadcasting style — eccentric, enthusiastic and deeply knowledgeable — introduced generations of viewers to lunar exploration, planetary science and observational astronomy. His books similarly combined technical authority with unusual warmth and immediacy.
The Comets belongs to an especially interesting period in Moore’s career, situated between the Apollo era and the great resurgence of public cometary fascination that would accompany Comet Kohoutek in the early 1970s and, later, Halley’s Comet in 1986. The timing of publication gives the work a particular historical resonance. Moore captures the atmosphere of anticipation surrounding modern cometary study just before advances in space-based observation radically transformed scientific understanding of comet nuclei, composition and orbital behaviour.
The book discusses many of the most famous comets in recorded history, including Halley’s Comet and Encke’s Comet, while also exploring the mathematics of cometary paths, the mechanics of tails and nuclei, and the history of comet hunting. Moore’s admiration for earlier generations of amateur astronomers is evident throughout. He repeatedly emphasises the importance of patient sky observation and the enduring possibility of discovery available even to non-professional observers.
Particularly appealing is Moore’s ability to communicate wonder without sacrificing scientific precision. Even when discussing orbital calculations or physical composition, the prose retains an unmistakable sense of excitement. This combination of authority and enthusiasm explains much of Moore’s enduring appeal both as a broadcaster and writer.
Signed and inscribed copies of Patrick Moore’s astronomy titles remain increasingly collectible, especially early UK first editions from the height of his broadcasting career. Moore was generous with inscriptions, often signing books for readers, lecture attendees and amateur astronomers, but signed copies in strong original condition remain notably desirable.
Condition: Book near fine in original black cloth boards, clean and sharp throughout with bright lettering and sound binding. Internally very clean. The inscription is bold and clear to the front free endpaper. Dustwrapper very good with light shelf wear and a few small closed tears and minor creasing to upper edges, but well preserved overall. An attractive example.
A scarce signed first edition by Britain’s most celebrated popular astronomer, combining scientific history, observational astronomy and the enduring romance of the cometary tradition.
