The Soldier’s Art – First Edition – 1966 – A Dance To The Music Of Time – Signed By Anthony Powell

London: Heinemann, 1966

First edition. Signed by the author.

Octavo, original red cloth boards lettered in gilt to spine, housed in the original unclipped dustwrapper. A superb signed first edition of the ninth volume in Anthony Powell’s monumental twelve-volume sequence A Dance to the Music of Time, widely regarded as one of the defining achievements of twentieth-century English literature.

The Soldier’s Art marks one of the most important transitions within the sequence, moving fully into the wartime years and exploring the strange bureaucracy, absurdity and quiet tragedy of military life during the Second World War. Powell’s gift for social observation is here sharpened by wartime dislocation, producing one of the darkest and most psychologically nuanced instalments in the series.

This copy is signed by Anthony Powell to the title page. Signed first editions of individual Dance volumes remain increasingly desirable, particularly in such attractive condition.

The striking dustwrapper design, with its geometric military motifs in black, gold and lavender-blue, is among the most visually distinctive jackets of the series.

Condition:
Book in fine condition, with clean red cloth, sharp gilt lettering and only minimal signs of handling. Internally very clean throughout. The dustwrapper remains particularly well preserved, with light rubbing, slight fading and faint toning only. A handsome collector’s copy.

An important signed wartime volume from A Dance to the Music of Time, increasingly sought after in collectable condition.
