From the official Les Voitures de Tintin collection, this impressive 1/24 scale La Limousine de Parade, reference 29919, recreates one of the most celebratory motoring scenes in Hergé’s Tintin en Amérique (Tintin in America).

The large blue open-top limousine is presented on its original display plinth beneath a clear protective case, with a line-drawn background reproducing the jubilant street scene from the album. Tintin and Snowy are shown standing prominently in the car during the ticker-tape parade, surrounded by the accompanying figures and details that make these larger 1/24 models particularly effective display pieces.

Produced by Editions Moulinsart as number 19 in the 1/24 scale vehicle collection. The model is constructed principally from resin and plastic and was issued in 2020. Hergé did not base the parade limousine upon one precise production car; the official Tintin account notes similarities to both the 1926 Chrysler Imperial and the 1927 Packard Eight Phaeton.

This example has previously been used for display but remains in fine condition. Importantly for the collector, it retains the original grey and white cardboard outer box together with the accompanying explanatory booklet. The combination of model, display case, illustrated setting, booklet and outer packaging makes this a substantially more complete example than loose models frequently encountered.

La Limousine de Parade: A Brief Account

The limousine appears towards the conclusion of Tintin en Amérique, following Tintin’s extraordinary confrontation with Chicago’s criminal underworld. Having helped rid the city of its gangsters, Tintin and Snowy are honoured with an elaborate ticker-tape parade, travelling through streets packed with cheering spectators in an imposing open limousine.

It is an unusually triumphant image within The Adventures of Tintin. Rather than Tintin slipping quietly away after another adventure, Hergé places his hero at the centre of an unmistakably American public spectacle. Confetti fills the air while Tintin acknowledges the crowds from the rear of the car, with Snowy beside him.

The vehicle itself is typical of Hergé’s ability to create convincing machinery without necessarily copying a single identifiable prototype. Its long bonnet, substantial wheelbase, open passenger compartment and formal proportions evoke the great American prestige automobiles of the late 1920s. The official Tintin documentation specifically compares its appearance with the Chrysler Imperial of 1926 and Packard Eight Phaeton of 1927.

At 1/24 scale, the model is large enough for the sculpted figures, bodywork, wheels, windscreen and passenger compartment to be reproduced with considerably greater presence than smaller-scale Tintin vehicle collections. The accompanying illustrated diorama is particularly appropriate to this model, recreating the dense cheering crowds and falling ticker tape which give the original scene much of its energy.

Tintin in America: A Brief Account

Tintin en Amérique occupies an important position in the development of Hergé’s celebrated series. Tintin travels to the United States and becomes embroiled in the organised crime of 1930s Chicago, encountering gangsters, corrupt businessmen and the rapidly changing landscape of modern America.

The album contains some of the series’ most recognisable early imagery: skyscrapers, speeding automobiles, industrial cities and spectacular chases. Vehicles play an especially significant part in its visual language, allowing Hergé to exploit the speed and movement that would become increasingly sophisticated features of his ligne claire storytelling.

The parade sequence provides an exuberant conclusion to the Chicago episodes. The limousine therefore represents considerably more than an incidental background vehicle: it forms the centrepiece of one of the album’s most memorable celebratory scenes.
