Product Description
Vintage Chad Valley Twins Mohair Teddy Bear in Original Outfit, c.1953–1960s
A highly appealing vintage Chad Valley Twins teddy bear, measuring 29 cm, with its original Queen Mother Royal Warrant foot label and additional Chad Valley “Hygienic Toys / Made in England” cloth label.
The bear is fully jointed and made in soft pale grey-beige mohair, with rounded ears, inset eyes and a black stitched nose and mouth. He is dressed in his original Chad Valley Twins outfit, comprising a bright green felt jacket, yellow waistcoat, white collar detail and red trousers. This colourful outfit gives the bear strong display presence and identifies him as one of Chad Valley’s characterful dressed post-war teddy bears.
The Royal Warrant foot label reads “The Chad Valley Co. Ltd / By Appointment / Toy Makers to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother”, supporting a post-1953 date. The additional cloth label, reading “Hygienic Toys / Made in England by The Chad Valley Co. Ltd”, further supports the attribution and adds to the bear’s collectable interest.
Condition
Good vintage condition overall. The mohair remains in notably good order for age, with only light signs of handling and very limited wear. The leatherette-style paw pads show some rubbing and age-related surface wear. The Queen Mother foot label is present, clear and readable, with only light age toning. The original clothing is bright and decorative with slight fading in some areas, minor creasing, light surface marks and normal vintage handling wear. He is missing his neck tie, but still has the original thread which would have had his swing label on. The bear remains highly displayable and has strong character.
Maker: The Chad Valley Co. Ltd, England.
Date: c.1953–1960s. The Queen Mother Royal Warrant label indicates a post-1953 date, while the style, clothing and cloth label are consistent with Chad Valley’s post-war production.
Height: 29 cm
Material: Pale grey-beige mohair plush with textile backing, leatherette-style paw pads, inset eyes, black stitched nose and mouth, woven cloth labels, woodwool/Kapok stuffing and original felt/fabric outfit.
Construction: Fully jointed, with moveable head, arms and legs. Traditionally made as a British teddy bear, with applied paw pads and sewn costume elements.
Why Buy from Hornseys?
For almost fifty years, Hornseys has specialised in sourcing, researching and offering carefully selected works of art, rare books, antiques and collectable objects. Every Chad Valley teddy bear offered for sale is examined individually and catalogued with the same attention to detail that we apply throughout our business.
Expertise and Research
Our descriptions are based on careful first-hand examination and supported by research into Chad Valley manufacturing history, Royal Warrant labels, materials, construction methods and comparable recorded examples. Where possible, we identify date ranges, model characteristics, original features and any later alterations to provide collectors with accurate and transparent information.
Authenticity and Provenance
Authenticity is fundamental to our approach. We assess each bear for period materials, labels, construction details and condition, clearly noting restorations, replacements or associated items where known. We believe buyers should have confidence that every description reflects the object as it is, not as we would like it to be.
Condition Reporting
Vintage teddy bears inevitably show signs of age and use. We provide honest condition assessments, accompanied by comprehensive photography, so collectors can make informed decisions. Any wear, repairs, losses or alterations are described as accurately as possible.
Carefully Curated Selection
We do not aim to offer large quantities of stock. Instead, we focus on finding examples that possess quality, character, historical interest and visual appeal. Whether a bear is a rare early Chad Valley example or a charming post-war companion, it must meet our standards before being offered for sale.
Established Reputation
Hornseys has been serving collectors and enthusiasts since 1976. From our gallery in Ripon, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, we have built a reputation for knowledgeable cataloguing, careful packing and personal customer service.
