First edition of this privately printed contemporary regimental record of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards during the Malayan Emergency, 1948–1951, printed locally in Kuala Lumpur by Caxton Press Ltd. and apparently produced for limited circulation within or around the battalion. Bibliographical evidence supports the 1951 date and local Malaysian printing: the National Library Board of Singapore’s bibliography of the Communist Party of Malaya records 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, Malaya 1948–1951 as a British Army publication printed in Kuala Lumpur by Caxton Press in 1951. A scholarly bibliography of Malayan Emergency unit histories likewise records the work as a battalion publication from 1951, under the title Malaya 1948–1951, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards.

The volume is historically significant because it records the battalion’s first major post-war active-service deployment. The 2nd Battalion Scots Guards served in Malaya from 1948 to 1951 during the opening phase of the Malayan Emergency, when British and Commonwealth forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations against the communist-led insurgency. The National Army Museum confirms the Scots Guards’ Malayan service during 1948–51, while contemporary and later Scots Guards Association records preserve the names of battalion casualties from the campaign.

The work is especially valuable because it was produced at the end of the battalion’s tour rather than retrospectively decades later, making it an important near-contemporary unit record. It belongs to a relatively small body of privately printed battalion histories and commemorative publications generated during the early Malayan Emergency. Such works often preserve material not readily available elsewhere, including photographs, operational summaries, personnel references, locations and contemporary regimental perspectives. A modern academic study of British counter-insurgency records specifically cites a 1951 “2nd Battalion Scots Guards, Malaya, 1948–51” record in the Guards Brigade archives, underlining the continuing research value of battalion-level documentary material from this deployment.

The campaign remains historically important and controversial. The 2nd Battalion was involved in the Batang Kali killings of December 1948, when unarmed civilians were killed during an operation by a Scots Guards patrol. The incident has remained the subject of historical, legal and political scrutiny. This publication should therefore be treated as a contemporary regimental source whose value lies partly in what it records—and potentially what it omits—about British counter-insurgency operations in Malaya.

The present copy is in near fine condition. The card wrappers are bright and clean, with the regimental title and crest sharply preserved. The binding is nice and tight. The pages and illustrations are nice and clean throughout, and the folding map is in fine condition. The volume is illustrated throughout and retains the fresh appearance of a carefully preserved copy. It is now housed in an easily removable clear acetate sleeve for protection.

Near fine.

A notably well-preserved example of a scarce, privately printed contemporary regimental history of the Malayan Emergency, with particular interest for collectors of the Scots Guards, British post-war military history, counter-insurgency, Malaya and Commonwealth military ephemera.
