Product Description

Träume und Tatsachen – Allied German-Language Propaganda Leaflet, G.62. Churchill on Unconditional Surrender and Germany’s Future. 1943 – Provenance: Robert Hastings; The Churchill Collection of Steve Forbes.

Original German-language Allied propaganda leaflet issued in 1943 and identified by the printed code G.62. The leaflet contrasts Nazi “dreams” with military and political reality, attacking German hopes that the war might still be won or negotiated on favourable terms.

The title panel is printed in bold black on red:

TRÄUME UND TATSACHEN
“Dreams and Facts”

The text addresses German readers directly, arguing that the defeats in North Africa, the losses of U-boats, the collapse of the Axis position in the Mediterranean, the fall of Mussolini, the destruction of Hamburg and the intensification of RAF bombing all demonstrate that Germany’s military situation is beyond recovery.

The reverse includes a substantial quotation from Winston Churchill on unconditional surrender. Churchill’s words are used to distinguish between the defeat of Nazism and vengeance against ordinary Germans: the Allies demand the surrender of the Nazi, Fascist and Japanese tyrannies, but do not intend to stain victory with inhumanity or revenge. The leaflet concludes with the forceful warning:

DENKT ODER STERBT!
“Think — or die!”

This is a strong example of mid-war Allied psychological warfare. Its purpose was to break confidence in Nazi propaganda, confront German readers with the changing military balance after Stalingrad, North Africa and Hamburg, and present surrender as the only alternative to national ruin.

The leaflet is institutionally recorded. A Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek exhibition records Flugblatt G 62 “Träume und Tatsachen”, found in August 1943, and quotes the same concluding warning “DENKT ODER STERBT!”. Old German auction records also note Träume und Tatsachen, G.62, among Second World War propaganda leaflets, though not as a strong modern retail comparable.

This copy has notable provenance, having formed part of the collection of Robert Hastings, Churchill scholar and collector, before entering The Churchill Collection of Steve Forbes, publisher of Forbes magazine. The provenance is particularly relevant here because Churchill’s statement forms a central part of the leaflet’s political argument.
