Manchester In 1846: A Brief Description

Manchester in 1846 was a city at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, embodying rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and social change. Known as “Cottonopolis,” it was the world’s leading centre for the cotton and textile industry, with its skyline dominated by chimneys from mills and factories. The city had transformed from a market town to a booming industrial metropolis in just a few decades.

The population of Manchester had swelled significantly, reaching over 300,000 by 1846. This population explosion was driven by people from rural areas of Britain and from abroad, particularly Ireland, who moved to the city in search of work in the factories. This rapid growth, however, also brought significant challenges. Housing conditions were often poor, with overcrowded slums and inadequate sanitation leading to widespread diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

The social landscape of Manchester in 1846 was marked by stark contrasts.
